What is lip filler?
Lip filler is a dermal filler made from hyaluronic acid, a substance found naturally in skin that attracts and holds water. Injected by a doctor in small amounts, it adds volume where it is placed — the body of the lip, the border, the cupid’s bow or the corners — and gradually breaks down over time. Because it is hyaluronic acid, it can also be dissolved with an enzyme if that is ever needed, which is one reason it is the standard choice for lips.

What happens at the appointment
1 · Assessment
The doctor looks at your lips in proportion to your face, discusses what you want and what would look natural, checks your medical history and takes consent. Not everyone is treated on the day — and not everyone should be.
2 · Treatment
Numbing cream is applied, and most lip fillers also contain a local anaesthetic. The filler is placed with a fine needle or cannula in small amounts, checking symmetry as they go. The treatment itself usually takes around 20–30 minutes.
3 · Settling
Swelling is normal and often makes lips look larger than the final result for a few days; bruising can take a week or so to fade. The settled result is judged at about two weeks, when a small top-up can be considered if needed.

How long does lip filler last?
Commonly six to twelve months, sometimes longer, depending on the product, the amount, your metabolism and how expressive your lips are. Lips move constantly, so filler tends to break down faster there than in the cheeks. Repeat treatment is a choice; if you do nothing, the filler gradually disappears and your lips return to how they were.
Risks and side effects
Common and short-lived: swelling, bruising, tenderness, small lumps that settle as the filler integrates, and temporary asymmetry. Less common: infection, prolonged swelling, filler migration above the lip line (usually linked to over-filling or repeated treatments), and cold-sore reactivation in people prone to them. Rare but serious: filler entering or compressing a blood vessel, which can damage skin and — extremely rarely — vision, and needs immediate treatment with a dissolving enzyme. This is why lips should only be treated by a doctor in a medical setting with the means to manage an emergency, and why we do not coordinate injectables anywhere else.
Who should not have lip filler?
- Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding
- Anyone with an active cold sore, skin infection or inflammation around the mouth
- People with certain bleeding disorders, autoimmune conditions or a known allergy to filler ingredients
- Anyone under 18, or anyone whose expectations a doctor considers unrealistic
Aftercare
For the first day or two: avoid heat, saunas, alcohol, strenuous exercise and pressure on the lips; sleep slightly propped up; keep make-up off the injection points until they have closed. Expect swelling to peak in the first 48 hours. You leave with written aftercare, and our 24/7 patient line is there if anything concerns you — sudden pain, colour change or blanching of the skin should be reported immediately.
Lip filler and your smile makeover — the sequencing point most people miss
Lips frame the teeth. If you are planning veneers, crowns or a smile makeover, the dental work generally comes first: your dentist designs tooth length and shape against your natural lip position, and swelling from filler would distort impressions, the trial smile and the final photographs. Lip treatment is therefore usually scheduled at the end of the dental trip, or on a later visit once the smile is finished, so the doctor can shape the lips around your new teeth rather than the other way round. Your written plan confirms the right order for your case.
A word of honesty about travelling for lip filler
Lip filler alone is rarely a reason to fly. It earns its place alongside a trip you are already making — for dental treatment, a hair transplant or other aesthetic treatments — where a doctor-led clinic and a single coordinated plan add value. If that is not you, we will say so.
Common questions
Does lip filler hurt?
Lips are sensitive, but numbing cream and the anaesthetic in most fillers keep discomfort to a brief sting and pressure. Tenderness for a day or two afterwards is normal.
How much filler will I need?
Most first treatments use a conservative amount — often around half to one millilitre — because a natural result comes from proportion, not volume. The doctor advises after seeing your lips; you can always add a little later, but removing is harder than adding.
Will my lips look natural?
That is the aim of a doctor-led approach: shape and definition in proportion to your face. If you want a dramatic look, the doctor will explain the limits and the migration risk honestly rather than simply agreeing.
Can lip filler be reversed?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with an enzyme (hyaluronidase) where clinically appropriate. This is also how the rare serious complication is treated, which is why treatment should only be done where the enzyme is to hand.
Should I have lip filler before or after my veneers?
Usually after. Your dentist designs your smile against your natural lip position, and swelling would interfere with impressions and photographs. Your plan confirms the order.
